How to Change the Blade on a Rotary Cutter
Rotary cutters are indispensable tools for quilters, crafters, and anyone working with fabrics or paper. They make cutting straight lines and intricate shapes a breeze. However, like any sharp instrument, rotary cutter blades go dull over time and need to be replaced.

Step 1: Get a Replacement Rotary Cutter Blade
Most brands of rotary cutters use standard replacement blades. They come in 60mm, 45mm, and 28mm sizes. I like to buy them in packs of 10.

You’ll need to replace the blade on your rotary cutter after every project or two. You can tell it’s time when you have to press harder to cut or you have to keep going over some cuts a second time.
Step 2: Remove the Old Blade
Most rotary cutters have a screw in the center of the blade that you need to undo to remove the blade. Others have a button or slider release. You may also need to remove the blade cover, depending on the brand and model of your cutter.
Use caution when removing the blade and handle it with care to avoid accidental cuts.
Step 3: Install the New Blade
Take your replacement blade and carefully align it with the blade holder on your rotary cutter. Most blades can be used in either direction.
Once the blade is properly aligned, follow the instructions for your specific cutter to secure it in place. This may involve reattaching the screw, pressing the release button, or sliding the mechanism back into position.

How to Dispose of Used Rotary Cutter Blades
You should never throw used rotary cutter blades directly in the trash because they can be a safety hazard to others. The blade can cut through the bag or cut people if they accidentally come in contact with it.
I typically wrap the blades in tape so that they are no longer sharp and will not cut the bag. Others like to store used blades in a plastic container.
